Summary: Having previously created an original design, student’s research period costume using the World Wide Web to find comparisons between their own outfit and elements of historical influence. These similarities and comparisons are showcased in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
Objectives:
  • Learn about the historical and cultural influences affecting design in textile applications;

  • Design with textiles providing the opportunity for students to be exposed to and enjoy a wide range of practical and historical experiences

Time Allotted 3-4 class sessions
How to Begin:

1.   Have students design and sketch a gown. Sketches, images and fabric preferences are scanned into the computer. Discuss the inspiration behind the creation including design aspects and fabric choices. Further discuss how historical designs have shaped the Textile and Design industry today. Consider the cut in a neckline that might be compared to the Victorian era etc.

2.   Using the World Wide Web, students research, locate and save to file designs from historical era’s the compare to their own. Students compare and the images, both on design and fabric choices.  

Tip! Students may find a few designs that show similarities to their own. While one historical piece has a similar neckline to their own, another may have the similar sleeves. 

3.   Demonstrate the technological skills required to create a Power Point presentation including features such as background colour, layout, fonts, texts and hyperlinks to Web Sites.

4.   Utilising the demonstrated skills, students create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to showcase their designs demonstrating the comparisons between both their gown and historical influences.

5.   Use the computer lab in your school and allow students to access each others presentations by moving between computers viewing the slideshows.

Student Activity
Description: Having previously created your own original design, you will now research period costume using the World Wide Web to find comparisons between your own outfit and elements of historical influence. These similarities and comparisons are showcased in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
Step A Planning the Content

What to do:
  1. Design task: Create a series of sketches for an original gown design. Think very carefully about styles, fabrics and functionality. Scan and save you images to the school server.
  2. Wow! How ever did you think of that gorgeous neckline? And the fall of your gown is exquisite! How did they design such a beautiful outfit? Have you thought about past designs in history and how they still shape our choices of design today? Discuss and compare with your teacher and classmates how historical design influences today’s Design and Textile industry.
  3. You have just created your very own design. It’s an original! Or is it? Lets find out how closely your design has been influenced by history. Using the World Wide Web, research, locate and save to file examples of similar design principals that you have incorporated into your gown from historical eras and periods.  

Tip! You may locate a few examples that show similarities to your own design. One example might replicate the neckline, while another has a similar hemline. Use as many examples as you like to show the comparison to your own design. 

  1. Your teacher will demonstrate the technological skills required to create a Microsoft Power Point presentation, including features such as background colour, layout, fonts, texts and hyperlinks to Web Sites.
  2. Using both your scanned sketches and images saved from the World Wide Web, create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to showcase your gown drawing comparisons to historical design principals.

 

Step B Creating a PowerPoint Showcase
Software: Microsoft PowerPoint
What to do: To create your presentation using PowerPoint, follow these tips and tricks:
  1. Open a new PowerPoint document.
  2. To apply a background effect, from the Format menu select Background. Drop down the menu and select a colour, fill effects or more colours.

  1. Select a colour or pattern and click ok. Select apply if you would like it to be applied to the current slide or select apply to all if you would like that background to be applied to every slide. You have now changed the colour of you background.
  2. Type in your information. To adjust the font select the text box you would like to change the font in. From the Format menu select Font. Select the font, font style, size, effect and colour you would like click OK.

 

  1. Time to insert your images. From the Insert menu select Picture and then From File. Locate the image you would like to insert and click ok. Using the resize handles, drag the image to the correct size.
  2. Let's jazz things up with a little animation. Select the item on the slide you would like to animate. From the Slideshow menu, select Custom Animation. Click on the add effect button and select an effect you would like to apply.

  1. The selected effect will be recorded on the task pane. Drop down the Start menu on the task pane and select when you would like the animation to begin eg – on click. Select the appropriate property and speed to suit. Click on play at the bottom of the screen and watch the animation you have added You can add as many animation features as you need be repeating the above steps.
  2. Let's add hyperlinks from objects or text in the presentation to sites you utilised on the web. Highlight the text or image you would like to add a hyperlink to and from the Insert menu select Hyperlink. The hyperlink dialogue box opens. Type in the website address and click ok. You will notice that a blue underline appear under you text to represent that you have entered a hyperlink. Repeat this process to enter in as many hyperlinks as you need.
